R.I.C.E. Technique

Rest

Ice

Compression

Elevation

ICE

Crushed or cubed in a towel

Heat

Moist heat, not dry heat


No subsititues (Ointments, Gels, Oils, Creams or Balms)

No heating pads dry or with sponges

10- 15 minutes on injured area *

45 minutes - 2 hours off

Repeat as needed

For acute injuries- Start with ice for the first 72 hours. Heat thereafter.

*Applying ice for longer periods of time actually defeats the purpose. Clock your applications.
